Field Trip FAQ
Both self-guided and guided field trips get the group rate of $9.00 per adult (teachers are free), $4.00 per student, and children 6 & under are free. To qualify for group pricing there is a minimum of 10 people paying in a single transaction.
We also offer free admission to Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve members, Indigenous peoples with tribal ID, and ASU students, staff and faculty.
You can book a field trip up to 1 year in advance, and no later than 2 weeks in advance.
We accept payment in cash, card or check. We ask that payment be made the day of your visit. All checks can be made out to Arizona State University.
The Preserve is open Wednesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., but final entry into the Preserve is at 1:30 p.m..
We recommend arriving earlier in the day rather than later. This will give you more time to enjoy the Preserve, and often the morning light is not as harsh, making it easier to spot some of the petroglyphs.
Both! We have both an indoor museum and an outdoor trail.
The Museum has exhibits that provide information about the archaeological research conducted here and the different cultural traditions who passed through here and made the petroglyphs. Outside, we have a trail to the petroglyphs.
Please note, restrooms are only available inside the building.
The trail is a quarter mile out to the petroglyphs, quarter mile back, making it a half mile walk total.
That is up to you. The walking trail is a quarter mile long and every visitor moves at their own pace. We recommend allowing for at least 90 minutes to fully experience all the Preserve has to offer. The museum and trail can be completed in as little as 45 minutes, while some visitors spend the entire day.
No, the trail is not paved and is not ADA accessible.
However, the trail is a relatively flat, gravel walking path. Visitors using wheelchairs, strollers, and other wheeled vehicles have been successful at navigating the trail in the past.
Call or email to check availability for a guided tour. You can also click the link above in order to reserve a guided tour.
Yes! There are a couple of resources available to supplement a self-guided experience.
We have Petroglyph Search Books available. These are a kind of scavenger hunt for kids to do while on the trail.
We also have an audio tour through Smartify, all you need to do is scan the QR code that is on the Preserve's visitor guides.
If interested in playing your way through the Preserve, we recently partnered with Agents of Discovery. This app gamifies museum experiences, providing questions as you make your way throught he gallery and trail to help you learn in a fun way. We suggest downloading the app prior to arrival at the Preserve.
Learn more about Agents of Discovery by clicking "Experience" on the menu bar above and clicking "Agents of Discovery" on the drop-down menu.
While we do not sell food at the Preserve, there are picnic tables on the east side of the building if you would like to bring lunch.
Water is available for purchase at the front desk for $1.00.
While we welcome service animals, no pets are allowed at the Preserve.
Parking is free to all of our visitors.
We always recommend wearing closed toe shoes, hats and sunscreen while at the Preserve. Depending on the weather, be sure to dress appropriately as a good amount of time at the Preserve will be spent outside.
No running, jumping, or shouting in the museum.
Stay on the trail at all times. There are many critters that call this site their home. We ask that everyone remain on the trail where visibility is best.
Do not touch or climb on the petroglyphs, or try to add your own.
This is a cultural site with thousands of years of history. We ask that everyone treat this place with respect.
